IN 1950 Lionel Trilling noted “the plain fact that nowadays there are no conservative or reactionary ideas in general circulation.” In 1952 Robert Taft, leader of conservative Republicanism, was once again denied the Republican presidential nomination. One can understand why Russell Kirk first intended to call the book he was then writing (published in 1953 as The Conservative Mind)
